William Shakespeare - A Midsummer Nights Dream

This poster, created for Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare Globe Theatre, illustrates a conceptual interpretation of the play. Many of the key moments of the plot revolve around a flower, which produces a liquid that induces uncontrollable feelings of blinding love. This can be interpreted to be a strong hallucinogenic theme within the play. The flower’s ‘love potion’ represents a drug or opiate like substance which is at the heart of the play.

A flower, constructed by hand from paper is the central image and anchor of the design. The paper-art was the photographed and duplicates of the image were layered over one another and offset in order to create movement within the image. I used appropriate colors to create a ‘trippy’ effect which references this new interpretation of the theme within the play.

The poster design has two functions. It serves as both an promotional poster and a theatrical programme for the audience. The poster can be folded into an A5 booklet which contains information about the play, the company, cast, crew, director and the Globe Theatre itself. As the booklet doubles up as a poster, it is a great souvenir from the night at the Globe Theatre for an audience member to keep and recall if ever needed.
